My Belief in God
|
Friends and relatives often ask me what I believe. Here are some
of their questions, and one believer’s answers. |
| |
| Q. |
Do you believe in God? |
| A. |
Yes. |
| |
| Q. |
Why do you believe in God? |
| A. |
My belief in God is an act of faith. It is impossible to prove that
God exists. It is also impossible to prove that God doesn’t exist.
So any belief in God, or any belief in atheism, is an act of faith.

| Q. |
When you say “God,” what do you mean? |
| A. |
God as revealed in the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books
of the New Testament.
|
| |
| Q. |
But how can you believe in something which, by your own admission,
can’t be proven? |
| A. |
Blaise Pascal, a devout Catholic and brilliant mathematician, considered
the consequences of the reality of God vs. your belief. He reasoned that
eternal reward is so much better than eternal punishment that, unless
you could be absolutely certain that God doesn’t exist (which you
can’t be!), it is to your advantage to believe in God.

| Q. |
Well and good. But what if you were to substitute “Zoroaster”
or “Buddha” or “Joseph Smith” or “Mohammed”
in place of “God” in Pascal’s wager? Why do you believe in
God but not in any of them?
|
| A. |
Evidence favors the existence of God. |
| |
The best evidence in Scripture is found in the Acts of the Apostles. The
Apostles were ordinary folks like you and me. But they gave their lives
and careers and fortunes for the gospel of Jesus, the risen Lord. If they
had not met the risen Jesus — if Jesus had been merely a good teacher
who died — there would have been no Acts of the Apostles and he would
have been forgotten 2000 years ago.
|
| |
The best evidence from my own life is the many prayers that God has answered
for me. God could not have answered my prayers if He didn’t exist.
